RESUMO

This research investigates the potential of utilizing vine shoots, a byproduct of the viticulture industry, as biosorbent for cadmium removal from aqueous solutions. The Spanish wine industry, one of the most influential sectors, produces two to three million tons of vine shoots. By using vine shoots as biosorbent, this study contributes to the circular economy paradigm, transforming waste materials into valuable resources and minimizing environmental impacts associated with waste generation and disposal. The research underscores the significance of vine shoots in biosorption due to its high lignocellulosic content. By experimental analysis, the efficacy of vine shoots in cadmium biosorption is evaluated, considering factors such as environmental impact or energy consumption. This study examines the effect of six key input parameters on cadmium removal efficiency and power consumption, identifying optimal conditions for maximum removal with minimal energy consumption. The findings suggest that vine shoots offer promising biosorption capabilities, promoting sustainability in wastewater treatment and environmental remediation efforts. By employing the response surface method alongside desirability functions, the study determined the optimal variables for two distinct optimization scenarios. Notably, in the second optimization scenario, a cadmium removal rate of 99.23 % was achieved while consuming 25.6 W of power. The input parameters for this achievement should be set as follows: initial cadmium concentration of 100 ppm, pH level of 8, stirring time of 75 min, stirring speed of 100 rpm, temperature of 26 °C, and a dose of vine shoots of 0.1 g.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To report normative stiffness parameters obtained using shear wave elastography in dorsiflexion from the Achilles tendons in asymptomatic professional ballet dancers and compare them with college-level athletes. METHODS: An Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved study consists of 28 professional ballet dancers and 64 asymptomatic collegiate athletes. The athletes were further subdivided into runner and non-runner disciplines. Shear wave elastography (SWE) measurements were made in maximum ankle dorsiflexion position. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Forty-eight (52%) males and 44 (48%) females were examined with an overall mean age of 22.2 (± 3.8 years). There were no significant SWE differences between dominant and non-dominant legs in both groups and comparing spin vs. non-spin leg of ballet dancers (p > 0.05). Ballet dancers had significantly higher short-axis velocity values than runners and non-runners (2.34 m/s increase and 2.79 m/s increase, respectively, p < 0.001). Long-axis velocity was significantly higher in ballet dancers compared to non-runners (by 0.80 m/s, p < 0.001), but was not different between ballet dancers and runners (p > 0.05). Short-axis modulus was significantly higher in dancers compared to runners and non-runners (by 135.2 kPa and 159.2 kPa, respectively, p < 0.001). Long-axis modulus (LAM) was not significantly different in ballet dancers when compared to runners. CONCLUSION: Asymptomatic professional ballet dancers exhibit greater short-axis tendon stiffness compared to athletes and greater long-axis tendon stiffness compared to non-runners but similar to runners. The functional benefit from elevated short-axis stiffness in dancers is not clear but may be related to greater axial loading and adaptations of the tendon matrix.

RESUMO

Cork taint provides off-odors and changes negatively wine composition. In fact, it is one of the most important causes of discarding bottled wine. 2,4,6-Trichloroanisole (TCA) is the most known molecule responsible of that problem. In this study, cork stoppers were artificially contaminated with a multi-pattern solution which contained different chloroanisoles and chlorophenols. Contaminated corks were immersed for 3 h in four Plasma Activated Water (PAW) generated during 1.5 min, 5 min, 15 min and 30 min. The products of OH•, NO• and NO2• with phenol were determined by HPLC for each PAW. After treating contaminated corks with PAW generated during 5 min, more than 72 % of TCA was removed and it was suggested OH• as the main reactive species decomposing TCA. Finally, other chloroanisole and chlorophenol molecules were examined after PAW treatments showing successful reductions in almost every molecule. Thus, it was presented PAW treatment as an easy solution for solving cork taint problems in wine industry.

RESUMO

Protein concentrates obtained from discarded grain flours of white chickpea Sinaloa (Cicer arietinum) (CC), "Azufrazin" bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) (BC), and white corn (Zea mays) (MC), were characterized biochemically through bromatological analyses (protein, lipid, fiber, moisture, ashes, and nitrogen free extract), HPLC techniques (amino acids content), and spectrophotometry (anti-nutrients: phytic acid, trypsin inhibitors, and saponins). The percentage of protein obtained from CC, BC, and MC was 71.23, 81.10, and 55.69%, respectively. Most peptides in the BC and CC flours had a molecular weight of <1.35 kDa, meanwhile, MC peptides were heavier (1.35 to 17 kDa). The amino acids (AA) profile of flours and protein concentrates were similar; however, all the protein concentrates showed an increased AA accumulation (300 to -400%) compared with their flours. The protein concentrates from BC registered the highest AA accumulation (77.4 g of AA/100 g of protein concentrates). Except for the phytic acid in CC and trypsin inhibitor in CC and MC, respectively, the rest of the protein concentrates exhibited higher amounts of the anti-nutrients compared with their flours; however, these levels do not exceed the reported toxicity for some animals, mainly when used in combination with other ingredients for feed formulations. It is concluded that CC and BC protein concentrates showed better nutritional characteristics than MC (level of protein, size of peptides, and AA profile). After biochemical characterization, protein concentrates derived from by-products have nutritional potential for the animal feed industry.

RESUMO

Hemotropic mycoplasmas are associated with subclinical disease in dogs and should be identified in blood donors. The objective was to investigate the presence and effect of M. haemocanis in units of packed red blood cells (pRBC) during storage. Canine donors (n = 10) were screened for M. haemocanis by quantitative real-time PCR. pRBCs were obtained from 5 hemoplasma negative dogs and 5 hemoplasma positive dogs. Each pRBC was aliquoted into two 100 mL transfer bags and stored at 4 °C. M. haemocanis loads and biochemical variables (pH, bicarbonate, potassium, sodium, chlorite, glucose, lactate, ammonia, PCV, and % hemolysis) were evaluated on days 1, 7, 18, and 29. M. haemocanis loads increased in pRBC from day 1-29 of storage. Glucose decreased and lactate increase faster in pRBC with M. haemocanis. This study contributes to understand hemoplasma metabolism and reinforces that dog donors should be tested for hemoplasmas.

RESUMO

Purpose: To evaluate the reliability and accuracy of a method of placing the femoral fixation location for lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) within a safe isometric area using anatomic landmarks. Methods: Using a pilot cadaveric specimen, the center of the radiographic safe isometric area for femoral fixation of LET, defined as a 1 cm (proximal-distal) area located proximal to the metaphyseal flare and posterior to the posterior cortical extension line (PCEL), was located using fluoroscopy and found to be 20 mm directly proximal to the center of the fibular collateral ligament (FCL) origin. Using 10 additional specimens, the center of the FCL origin and a location 20 mm directly proximal was identified. K-wires were placed at each location. A lateral radiograph was obtained, and distances of the proximal K-wire relative to the PCEL and metaphyseal flare were measured. The location of the proximal K-wire relative to the radiographic safe isometric area was assessed by 2 independent observers. Intrarater and inter-rater reliability was calculated for all measurements using intraclass coefficients (ICCs). Results: There was excellent intrarater and inter-rater reliability for all radiographic measurements (.908 to .975 and .968 to .988, respectively). In 5/10 specimens, the proximal K-wire was outside of the radiographic safe isometric area, with 4/5 anterior to the PCEL. Overall, the mean distance from the PCEL was 1 mm ± 4 mm (anterior), and the mean distance from the metaphyseal flare was 7.4 mm ± 2.9 mm (proximal). Conclusion: A landmark-based technique referencing the FCL origin was inaccurate in the placement of femoral fixation within a radiographic safe isometric area for LET. Therefore intraoperative imaging should be considered to ensure accurate placement. Clinical Relevance: These findings may help to decrease the likelihood of misplacement of femoral fixation during LET by showing that landmark-based methods without intraoperative image guidance may be unreliable.

RESUMO

Image-guided minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of sensory nerves has emerged as a treatment option for pain and swelling associated with advanced symptomatic joint and spine degeneration to bridge the gap between optimal medical therapy and surgical treatments. RFA of articular sensory nerves and the basivertebral nerve use image-guided percutaneous approaches resulting in faster recovery time and minimal risks. The current published evidence indicates clinical effectiveness; however, further research must be performed comparing other conservative treatments with RFA to understand further its role in different clinical settings, such as osteonecrosis. This review article discusses and illustrates the applications of RFA for treating symptomatic joint and spine degeneration.

RESUMO

Allelopathy is a frequent interaction between species in Mediterranean ecosystems and it is also one of the proposed strategies to explain the colonisation of invasive species. To confirm the importance of allelopathic potential as a mechanism of invasion of non-native species in Mediterranean ecosystems, it would be advisable to compare the allelopathic effects of non-native plants with native plants on the same target species and thus avoid overestimating the role of phytotoxicity in the invasion process. The main objective of this work was to compare the allelopathic activity of native species typical of Mediterranean ecosystems, classified as allelopathic, with the allelopathic activity of non-native species that may have an invasive character in these ecosystems. To this end, we selected three native species (Cistus ladanifer, Pistacia lentiscus, and Pistacia terebithus) and three non-native species (Acacia dealbata, Acer negundo, and Salix babylonica), and we analysed their effect on the species Lactuca sativa and the native species Lavandula stoechas and Echium plantagineum. The tests on L. sativa showed that all species have allelopathic activity. The tests on L. stoechas and E. plantagineum revealed that P. terebinthus exerted the greatest effect, being the only species that maintained an inhibitory effect at extract concentrations of 50% and 25% in all the analysed parameters, except in germination and cotyledon emergence for E. plantagineum. There were no significant differences in the effect on germination between non-native and native species, although significant differences were found in the effect on root size in the three analysed concentrations, with the native species producing greater inhibition. In conclusion, these species exert a negative effect on the selected native target species, but the negative effect of the native species is greater than that of the non-native species. These results indicate that it is important to compare the allelopathic effects of invasive and native species to correctly estimate the phytotoxic effect of invasive species on their invasiveness.

RESUMO

Degenerative knee osteoarthritis is a progressive debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Most patients experience limited range of motion, inflammation, swelling, and pain. Management options can lead to short- and long-term pain relief. Short-term pain relief usually involves conservative medical treatments such as NSAIDs, weight loss, physical therapy, and corticosteroid injections. The ultimate long-term pain relief treatment method involves total knee arthroplasty. The treatment algorithm for knee OA also includes managing pain until a patient is eligible for arthroplasty. Furthermore, about 20% of patients experience chronic pain after TKA without complications such as hardware loosening and infection with limited treatment options. The pathophysiology of this is unknown. Cooled radiofrequency ablation has been demonstrated to be clinically effective by disrupting the integrity of deep sensory nerves and hence interfering with transmission of pain signal. The analgesic effect after c-RFA has been reported up to 24 months. Here, we present an overview of the clinical application of cooled radiofrequency ablation and a summary of its effectiveness in the treatment of pain in the setting of advanced OA and symptomatic TKA.

Abstract Introduction: To the best of our knowledge, the research herein presented is the first multicenter study in Mexico to analyze the development of clinical aptitude in medical units that train cardiologists. Objective: To determine the degree of development of clinical aptitude in cardiology residents at three High Specialty Medical Units. Methods: Multicenter, cross-sectional design. All students of the 2019-2020 academic year were included in the study. An instrument was constructed that evaluated clinical aptitude based on eight indicators and 170 items; conceptual/content validity and reliability were assessed by five cardiologists with teaching and educational research experience. Results: By indicator and year of residence, significant statistical differences were observed in the CMN20Nov academic site. At HCSXXI and INCICh, statistically significant differences were observed in one of eight indicators. Differences between R1 residents (n = 41) of all three academic sites were estimated by indicator, with statistical significance being recorded in three of eight indicators. Between R2 (n = 35) and between R3 residents (n = 43), the result was similar. Conclusions: The degree of clinical aptitude development can be considered intermediate in all three academic sites, probably because the instrument explored problematized clinical situations that required the residents to critically reflect on their clinical experience.

RESUMO

Introduction: The COVID19 pandemic collapsed intensive care units (ICUs) all around the world, conditioning systems of care (SOC) for other critical conditions such as severe ischemic stroke requiring endovascular treatment (EVT). Our aim was to evaluate the impact of an adaptive Stroke Unit (SU) based SOC on functional outcomes, with the goal of avoiding both general anesthesia (GA) and ICU admission in stroke patients treated with EVT. Material and methods: We performed an observational study comparing data from our traditional ICU-GA based SOC and the adaptive SU-Conscious Sedation (CS) based SOC (consecutive patients undergoing EVT 1 year prior and after onset of the pandemic). Primary outcome was 90-days modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and secondary outcomes included, among others, in-hospital complications, and hospital length of stay (LOS). Results: A total of 210 EVT were performed during the study period (107 under the traditional-SOC and 103 under the adaptive-SOC). A significantly greater proportion of patient was treated under CS (15.9% vs 57.3%; p < 0.001) and admitted for post-procedural care at SU (15% vs 66%; p < 0.001) in the adaptive SOC. Rates of in-hospital complications were similar in both periods, with reduced hospital LOS in the adaptive SOC (10 (7-15) vs 8 (6-12); p = 0.005). The adaptive SOC was associated with higher odds for 90 days favorable outcome (mRS 0-2) (aOR 3.15 (1.34-7.39); p = 0.008). Conclusion: In our case, an adaptive SOC that combined both preference for CS and postprocedural care in SU was associated with better functional outcomes and reduced healthcare resource use for patients undergoing EVT.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study examined whether the 786 NOS3 polymorphism is associated with the risk of hemorrhagic transformation (HT) in stroke patients with anterior large vessel occlusion (ALVO) treated using endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). METHODS: We performed an observational cohort study that included 118 patients with ALVO who underwent EVT. HT was assessed in follow-up CT and MRI. HT and non-HT patients were compared in terms of the 786 NOS3 polymorphism, flow mediated dilation (FMD) values within 3 days after the stroke, and collateral status based on three grading scales. Demographics, vascular risk factors, additional radiological data including ASPECT score, thrombus length and infarct size, and EVT procedure and outcome variables were also included. RESULTS: Radiological HT occurred in 55 (46.6%) patients and the 786T/T NOS3 polymorphism was associated with HT (unadjusted OR of 2.33, 95%CI: 1.05-5.20, adjusted OR of 3.14, 95%CI: 1.16-8.54). Collateral status and systemic endothelial function assessed by FMD were not mediators of this relationship as no differences were seen in the median FMD percentage values or collateral status between NOS3 genotypes. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that genetic variations affecting the NO pathway, such as the 786 NOS3 polymorphism, may contribute to individual variability in the occurrence of HT and these results support involvement of this pathway in the pathogenesis of ischemia-reperfusion injury after EVT.

RESUMO

Osteoarthritis (OA) is globally the most prevalent joint disease and causes patients great pain, limited joint mobility, and psychological distress. Short- and long-term therapies like steroid injections and arthroplasty exist, respectively. Joint arthroplasty can effectively treat symptomatic end-stage OA, but most patients do not go through with surgery because they are not qualified, have comorbidities, or do not wish to undergo surgery. As a result, patients can turn to opioid agonists for pain relief, which contributes to the growing opioid epidemic that mars our communities. Cooled radiofrequency ablation (C-RFA) is an effective treatment modality that can alleviate the pain associated with moderate to severe OA, especially in patients who have tried and failed conservative therapy. This review article elucidates the benefits of C-RFA, while also walking through the technical steps to performing the procedure. For patients suffering from debilitating joint OA, especially of the knee, C-RFA is a minimally invasive procedure that ensures pain relief.

RESUMO

Introduction: The symptomatology of eating disorders includes psychological and behavioral aspects with subclinical and long-standing eating concerns. These are a clear precursor to the development of established and often severe eating disorders. For this reason, it is crucial to investigate its antecedents and correlates to later inform the development of prevention programs. This article has been prepared with the main objective of providing Primary Care health professionals with the most up-to-date and relevant information for the early identification of eating behavior disorders (EDs), helping them to make the best decisions about the problems emerging in their practice. It seeks to join together the growing but still limited body of literature that advocates a greater emphasis on programs to prevent and anticipate the recognition of this group of disorders at the first level of the health system.

Liver lipidosis is a metabolic disorder mostly observed in high yielding dairy cattle, especially during the transition period. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between hepatic lipid infiltration, biochemical indicators of liver function, and body condition score (BCS) variation in dairy cows. Fifty-one multiparous Holstein cows raised in a confined system were evaluated. Liver biopsies and blood samples were collected, and BCS was measured on days 3 and 28 postpartum. Lipid infiltration was determined by histologic examination. The plasma activity of aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyl transferase and concentration of beta-hydroxybutyrate, non-esterified fatty acids, albumin, total bilirubin, and cholesterol were determined. BCS was measured using objective (camera) and subjective (visual) methods. Mild lipid infiltration was found in 3.92% of cows sampled on day 3 and 5.88% on day 28. Bilirubin was significantly higher on day 3 than on day 28 postpartum, and cholesterol was significantly higher on day 28 than on day 3 in all cows. There was no difference in biochemical analytes between cows with and without lipidosis. On day 3, mean subjective BCS was 3.10 and objective BCS was 3.16, while on day 28, these scores were 2.91 and 2.99, respectively. The calculated liver function index (LFI) was found to be a more sensitive indicator of liver function than the hepatic analytes evaluated. No correlation between BCS variation and lipid infiltration was found. Cholesterol and bilirubin levels showed the most remarkable changes during the early postpartum period. LFI is a potential indicator of postpartum liver function.

ABSTRACT Two studies were conducted on sheep in the high tropics of Colombia to study reproductive and fertility parameters associated with animal growth in this ecological zone. In the first trial, 1,389 records were used to analyze, through descriptive statistics, the fertility parameters, the birth rate, and the yield per multiple births of three genetic groups of sheep: the native Criolla and Manchada Paramuna breeds, and they were compared with the imported race Blackface. In the second study, the duration of the estrous cycle was determined and serum progesterone values were determined during the estrous cycle in 19 Criolla x Romney Marsh crossbred ewes, in this experiment, five moments of the cycle were analyzed. The fertility rates found in the Criolla and Manchada Paramuna breeds were 73.1 and 72 %, respectively, and were higher than those of the Blackface sheep (65 %). Blackface ewes showed the highest incidence of multiple births (29 %) and Manchada Paramuna ewes had the highest birth rates (93.7 %). Criolla x Romney Marsh crossbred ewes recorded a mean duration of the estrous cycle of 17.8 d. The highest progesterone secretion (11.5 nmol/L) occurred on day 9 of the estrous cycle, while in the estrus phases, its value was 0.32 nmol/L. This study contributes to the knowledge of the reproductive aspects of Colombian native sheep.

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the shoulder and hip is a leading cause of physical disability and mental distress. Traditional nonsurgical management alone is often unable to completely address the associated chronic joint pain. Moreover, a large number of patients are not eligible for joint replacement surgery owing to comorbidities or cost. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of articular sensory nerve fibers can disrupt the transmission of nociceptive signals by neurolysis, thereby providing long-term pain relief. A subtype of RFA, cooled RFA (CRFA), utilizes internally cooled electrodes to generate larger ablative zones compared with standard RFA techniques. Given the complex variable innervation of large joints such as the glenohumeral and hip joints, a larger ablative treatment zone, such as that provided by CRFA, is desired to capture a greater number of afferent nociceptive fibers. The suprascapular, axillary, and lateral pectoral nerve articular sensory branches are targeted during CRFA of the glenohumeral joint. The obturator and femoral nerve articular sensory branches are targeted during CRFA of the hip. CRFA is a promising tool in the interventionalist's arsenal for management of OA-related pain and symptoms, particularly in patients who cannot undergo, have long wait times until, or have persistent pain following joint replacement surgery.
